    Sun 21st Feb
    A passion for Neighbourhood Support led up to this very informal and friendly sharing of experiences and ideas by 9 Street Co-ordinators. Held at the new Civil Defence building in Elcoat St. it was led by our City Co-ordinator Mrs Roi Stephens who focused attention on 3 main areas:

    1. NS Waitakere and how it operates within the community.
    2. Maintenance of your NS group.
    3. Recruitment of new members for your group.

    There are more training sessions planned so if you think you may be interested, please contact the NS office on 834 5815

  • 2nd Hand Booksale
    Sun 20th September 2009
    WOW- what a weekend that was. What you see in the photo is only HALF of what we had available! Many thousands of books sold and nearly $5000 raised to help set up and support the growing number of Neighbourhood Support groups in the Waitakere area.

    We would sincerely like to thank all the advertisers, the hundreds of residents who donated the books, the libraries and helpers who collected them for us, the volunteers who helped to transport and sell them, NZ Safety for their 'high viz vests' , and of course the 'happy bookworms' who left the hall with their bags filled.

    We will be having two more Book fairs during 2010 (dates are yet to be decided upon) so if you missed this one, happy reading until then ! We will also start collecting more books after Xmas and would love to hear from you if you would like to help in any way.

  • Neighbourhood Week
    Saturday 31st October to Sunday 8th November 2009
    What is it?
    Neighbourhood Week is a week dedicated to getting to know the people who live close to you. It is an opportunity to get to know the people in your neighbourhood.
    Why have Neighbourhood Week?
    Neighbours can be powerful allies in helping to address issues such as loneliness and fear of crime.
    What can I do?
    Past events that people have organised include:
        * Neighbourhood picnics, parties and barbecues
        * Neighbourhood sports such as street cricket or soccer
        * Potluck dinners
        * Hired a skip and cleaned up the street
        * Public meetings with guest speakers
        * Morning teas
        * Monster street garage sales
        * Wine and cheese evenings
        * Cultural feasts / fairs / gala days - celebrating diversity!
        * Starting a Neighbourhood Support Group
    Other ideas include baking a cake or buying a packet of biscuits and going and knocking on your neighbour's door, especially the elderly, those at home with young families, those from different cultures and those you don't know.
    Neighbourhood Support New Zealand encourages you to use Neighbourhood Week 2009 to get to know your neighbours.
    Any queries please contact our office on 834 5815.
